When I was thinking about using the sketch for this picture I was eager to paint it as a study in blue with a muted grey green foreground and a low light. I particularly wanted to paint the posts at the foot of the mountain so that the under wash provided both their colour and tone. The low light threw the buildings into sharp contrast between the bright sides and those in shadow and I enjoyed painting the buildings with washes of varying tones but of the one colour.
