217 St Mary the Virgin Church, Stone, Kent. 35 x 35cm £330m £350

The portrait of the West end of the church was something that I had been contemplating painting for some time. I wished to paint it against the night sky with a very dark wash and this became a composition that I felt would work with the façade floodlit. The challenge was to make the wash for the night sky dark enough without it becoming muddy. This was achieved by ensuring that the two colours used for the wash were both transparent.
