This painting was conceived whilst driving through the English countryside in late October and early November when in 2015 the trees were particularly colourful with oranges and yellows and the long views across the Lincolnshire Wolds showed the patchwork of fields in the far distance. Every so often a low pressure area swept across the landscape muting the autumnal colours. I wanted to paint a watercolour of those climatic conditions that showed autumn in its windswept mood. The figures, posts, gate and birds were all put in to help give the sense of scale.
